Do you remember the sensation of biting into a burger piled high
with all your favorite toppings and held together with a
hamburger bun? Until recently, I didn't. It has been four and a
half years since I've had anything other than a lettuce wrapped
burger. Fortunately, I have rediscovered the pleasure of having a
real burger because a thoughtful user of this site took the time to
e-mail me about Five Star Burgers. At Five Star Burgers you can
build your own burger and top it off with a gluten-free hamburger
bun.
Initially, I had reservations about a gluten-free hamburger bun. I
was pretty sure that it would taste like cardboard and would fall
apart the minute I picked it up. I was wrong. In fact, after I took
a couple bites, I was worried because the bun was too good. I
questioned the waitress to make sure it was gluten free. She
actually took my plate back to the kitchen and verified that it
was. My hamburger was heavenly.
I called Five Star Burgers prior to my visit because I wanted to be
sure that steps were taken to prevent cross contamination. I had
a great conversation with Kevin, the chef, who thoroughly
answered all my questions about their food preparation process.
To provide the highest quality product possible, Five Star Burgers
grinds all their meats at the restaurant. The grinder is cleaned
after each use. The cooking area has two separate grill tops. One
is used for grilled sandwiches and one is used to cook meats -
beef, turkey or chicken. No bread products are cooked on the grill
for meats.
Our server was very attentive and willing to find out the answers
to my numerous questions. She knew that they had gluten-free
hamburger buns but she was not familiar with the precautions
necessary to prevent cross contamination. Therefore, I would
recommend that you speak to the manager just to make sure your
requirements are communicated properly to the kitchen staff.
Update: In May, 2011 the manager at Five Star e-mailed me to
let me know that they no longer maintain dedicated fryers for
their French Fries. Therefore, none of the fries served are gluten
free.
