There is a Jason's Deli in most major cities and recently three
Jason's Deli locations opened in Albuquerque. This is a
wonderful thing for those of us who maintain a gluten-free diet
because Jason's offers almost any sandwich combination you
can create in gluten-free form.
I ordered pastrami and Swiss cheese with mustard, lettuce and
tomato. The sandwich that was delivered to my table looked
incredible and it tasted that way, too. As the picture clearly
shows, there was an inches-high stack of shaved meat and the
sandwich was topped with bread, not toast. The bread even
had a thick crust, and it didn't look like gluten-free bread. So I
walked my sandwich up to the manager to make sure the
bread was gluten free and was told that the bread used is
made by Udi's. I think I'll always be suspicious of bakery
products labeled gluten free that look or taste too good!
When I placed my order, I questioned the staff person at the
cash register about the process that Jason's follows for their
gluten free customers. She was very well informed and told me
that the person who prepares the gluten-free sandwiches does
so at a separate station and puts new gloves on. All the
ingredients that go in gluten-free sandwiches are pre-cut and
separated in advance. Your sandwich will be served with
potato chips and a pickle which are also gluten free.
I had the opportunity to order the same sandwich for takeout
at the Jason's Deli in Tyson's Corner, VA. Their process for
making gluten-free sandwiches was the same and they also
use Udi's bread. However, I would not recommend getting your
sandwich 'to go' because the bread quickly gets soggy.
