I love barbeque, but I quickly discovered that a gluten-free diet and
eating barbeque at a restaurant were mutually exclusive. So you can
imagine my delight when I received an e-mail from the manager of
The Cube letting me know that their barbeque and their French fries
(yes, you read that correctly. I wrote barbeque and French fries.) are
completely gluten free. According to the manager's e-mail, The Cube,
which is located on the South side of Central Avenue just West of
University, offers all sorts of barbeque using homemade rubs and
barbeque sauce. Their French fries are made in house, and the French
Fries are fried in their own oil. Salad dressings, broths and most
everything else are made within the confines of the restaurant so the
staff knows exactly what is in each item on the menu.
Within 48 hours of receiving this e-mail, I was standing at The Cube
placing an order for way too much food. Rather than making a
decision, I ordered ribs, chicken, brisket and fries.
I don't have words adequately to describe the taste explosion that I
experienced. The French fries were irresistible and it took conscious
effort to switch from the fries to the chicken. However, I was richly
rewarded with perfectly smoked chicken that tasted great unadorned
but was many times better when dipped in their homemade barbeque
sauce. About halfway through eating the chicken, I forced myself to
try the brisket. I've eaten excellent brisket in the past but never
anything quite like this. Again, it didn't need barbeque sauce but it
was heavenly with it. I never even had a chance to taste the ribs
because my children took advantage of my undivided attention and
ate every last one of them!
After four years on the gluten-free diet, I've made peace with
restaurant meals which generally aren't as tasty as the normal fare.
At The Cube, I don't have to settle because I can order from the
same menu as everyone else. Barbeque is back in our lives and in the
best form ever!
