One of my all time favorite Albuquerque restaurants is Huong Thao. It is family-owned and operated, and they serve delicious and very reasonably-priced Vietnamese cuisine. I was a frequent patron of Huong Thao for several years before I started living gluten free, and I appreciate this restaurant even more now because so much of their standard fare is gluten free.

We recently met friends at Huong Thao and some of what we ordered is pictured here. Of course, I asked our server what she would suggest I order and exactly how cross contamination is

prevented. Since everything is made from scratch and the staff is all part of the owner’s family, I received very clear and complete answers to my questions. I had no doubt my meal would be gluten free after this conversation. And, based on past experience, I knew whatever I chose would taste incredible. What I didn’t anticipate was the large variety of gluten-free entrees – everyone at our table ordered something gluten free without having this intention. I actually planned on tasting a little bit of everything

including the Curry Chicken. However, I liked my noodle soup so much that I didn’t stop eating it until the bowl was completely empty. By that time I was too full to try anything else and it was too late anyway. There was nothing left on anyone’s plate!

The Noodle Soup with Shrimp was filled with rice noodles, vegetables and a very tasty broth. The plate on the side held fresh cilantro, bamboo shoots and jalepeno slices. I put all of it in the soup and proceeded to consume a perfectly spiced, textured and filling meal. Along with my soup, I ordered Spring rolls which contained shrimp and vegetables wrapped in rice paper and served cold (also known as Summer rolls). They make a great substitute for the egg rolls I can no longer have.

It is such a treat to eat in a restaurant that offers so many options that are gluten-free without alteration.

Update: The Mung Bean crepe, which is on the gluten-free menu, is excellent and tastes nothing like beans!
