Walmart

GroceryStoreClipArt1One of the last places I expected to find a selection of gluten-free foods was at Walmart. I assumed that Walmart would have sales volume targets that would be way beyond customer demand for gluten-free products. My assumption was completely wrong. Thanks to an alert user of this site and Support Group member, I discovered a gluten-free food section in the new Walmart Supercenter on the South East corner of Menaul and Wyoming.

Since I had not shopped for gluten-free products at Walmart before, I walked up and down every aisle. I found DeBoles brown rice pasta and some of Pamela’s cookies displayed right next to their gluten-filled counterparts. However, the vast majority of gluten-free foods are in their own section. Here you will find a wide array of pastas including several varieties of Tinkyada and Schär, a European brand of gluten-free pasta. Additionally, there are Mrs. Leeper’s pasta dinners and Annie’s Rice Pasta and Cheese kits.

GroceryStoreClipArt2Quite a bit of shelf space in the gluten-free section is allocated to Nature’s Path EnviroKids line of breakfast cereals and grain bars. There are also a couple different types of Nature’s Path Corn Flakes. If you’re interested in snacks and sweets, you can choose from Enjoy LifeMidel, or Pamela’s cookies and Glutino pretzels and crackers. Finally, there are baking mixes from Bob’s Red MillPamela’s and Gluten Free Pantry.

I found the full line of gluten-free Chex cereals mixed in with other General Mill’s cereals and a couple of the gluten-free Betty Crocker mixes in the baking aisle. Unfortunately, I didn’t find any of the major vendors of gluten-free frozen foods represented in the vast frozen-foods section.

Of course, many of the products sold in any grocery store are naturally gluten free and Walmart is no different in this respect. However, the prices at Walmart are definitely lower on their gluten-free inventory than those of their counterparts. This new Supercenter is a beautiful store and the most visually appealing Walmart I’ve visited.
